Springtail

Natural Habitat

Damp environments, often in soil, leaf litter, decaying wood, under bark, in fungus, and sometimes in houses (especially bathrooms or kitchens with moisture issues).

Diet & Feeding

Mainly detritivores, feeding on decaying organic matter, fungi, algae, bacteria, and sometimes pollen or plant material. They are important decomposers.

Behavior Patterns

Known for their ability to jump using a furcula (a forked appendage on their abdomen). They are sensitive to desiccation and prefer moist conditions. Often found in large aggregations. They undergo direct development, meaning young are miniature versions of adults.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans. They do not bite, sting, or spread diseases. In homes, large numbers can indicate a moisture problem. Environmentally, they are highly beneficial as decomposers, helping to cycle nutrients in soil and promoting healthy plant growth.
