Natural Habitat
Found exclusively on human hair, typically within 1/4 inch of the scalp for warmth; often found behind ears and at the nape of the neck.
Diet & Feeding
Eggs do not eat; the hatched nymphs and adults feed exclusively on human blood from the scalp.
Behavior Patterns
Eggs are glued to hair shafts with a waterproof cementing substance. They take about 6-9 days to hatch into nymphs.
Risks & Benefits
Risk: Causes pediculosis, leading to intense itching, scalp irritation, and potential secondary bacterial skin infections from scratching. No known ecosystem benefits.
