Bird Lice (Mallophaga)

Natural Habitat

Exclusively found on the bodies of birds, specifically between feathers and on the skin.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on feathers, skin flakes, and occasionally blood if the skin is broken; some species consume dermal debris.

Behavior Patterns

They are permanent ectoparasites and cannot survive long off the host. They transmit between individual birds through nesting contact or mating. They lay eggs (nits) and glue them to feather shafts.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Can cause irritation, feather damage, and anemia in birds. They do not live on or bite humans long-term as they are host-specific, but can cause temporary irritation if they crawl on a person. Benefits: None to the ecosystem; purely parasitic.
