Bird Mite (Identification is tentative due to image blur)

Natural Habitat

Typically found in bird nests (pigeons, starlings, sparrows, poultry) but will migrate into homes near nests seeking new hosts during late spring and early summer.

Diet & Feeding

Hematophagous (blood-feeders); primarily feed on the blood of birds but will bite humans and pets if their primary host is unavailable.

Behavior Patterns

They are active wanderers that crawl rapidly; unlike fleas, they do not jump. They tend to become a nuisance indoors when young birds leave a nest and the mites are left without a food source.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Can cause intense itching, skin irritation, and small red bumps (papules) on humans. While annoying, they do not typically transmit diseases to humans and cannot reproduce on human blood. Benefits: None in a domestic setting.
