Exclusively inhabits human coarse body hair, most commonly in the pubic region, but can also be found in eyelashes, eyebrows, beard, or armpit hair.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate hematophage; it feeds exclusively on human blood several times a day.

Behavior Patterns

They are relatively sedentary and remain attached to hair shafts; they cannot jump or fly and are transmitted primarily through close physical contact. They have a lifecycle consisting of egg (nit), nymph, and adult stages.

Risks & Benefits

Risk: Causes pediculosis pubis (infestation), resulting in intense itching, blue spots (maculae caeruleae) on the skin from bites, and potential secondary bacterial infections from scratching. No documented environmental benefits.
