Diet & Feeding
Primarily aphid-eaters, but also consume scale insects, psyllids, and occasionally the eggs of other insects or soft-bodied larvae.
Behavior Patterns
Known for congregating in large numbers on sun-exposed surfaces in the autumn. They exhibit reflexive bleeding, releasing a yellow, foul-smelling fluid from leg joints when threatened.
Risks & Benefits
Highly beneficial to agriculture as a biological control for pests like aphids; however, they can be a nuisance when infesting homes, can bite humans, and may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
