Springtail
Scientific Name: Collembola
Order & Family: Entognatha: Collembola (subclass)
Size: Typically tiny, ranging from less than 1 mm to about 6 mm in length.

Natural Habitat
Damp environments rich in organic matter, such as leaf litter, soil, decaying logs, and indoors in high-humidity areas like bathrooms, basements, or near potted plants.
Diet & Feeding
Mostly detritivores feeding on decaying plant material, fungi, mold, bacteria, and microscopic algae.
Behavior Patterns
Named for their unique 'furcula,' a tail-like appendage folded under the abdomen that acts like a spring, allowing them to jump great distances when disturbed. They often gather in large numbers when conditions are damp.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans and pets; they do not bite, sting, or damage structural wood. They are beneficial decomposers in soil ecosystems but can be a nuisance pest inside homes if moisture levels are high.
