Scavengers that consume animal-based materials such as wool, silk, leather, fur, feathers, and pet hair, as well as dried food products.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae are slow-moving and avoid light. They undergo several molts (shedding their skin) before pupating into adult beetles. They are most active in spring and early summer.

Risks & Benefits

They are major household pests that cause damage to textiles and stored goods. Their 'hairs' (setae) can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. They do not bite humans.
