Natural Habitat
Deciduous forests, woodlands, and gardens, particularly where dead or decaying wood is plentiful. Larvae live in rotting wood underground.
Diet & Feeding
Adult stag beetles feed on tree sap, decaying fruit, and nectar. Larvae feed on decaying wood.
Behavior Patterns
Males are known for their large mandibles, which they use to fight other males for mating rights. They are largely nocturnal and can be attracted to lights. Larval development can take several years.
