Natural Habitat
Found indoors in dark, moist, and humid areas such as bathrooms, basements, and attics; also found in cracks, crevices, and under rocks outdoors.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds on carbohydrates (polysaccharides) such as sugars and starches. This includes paper, glue, clothing (cotton, linen, silk), wallpaper paste, and dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal and photophobic (avoids light); they move in a distinctive wiggling motion resembling a fish swimming. They are fast runners and can survive long periods without food.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: They are household pests that can damage books, wallpaper, stored food, and clothing. They do not bite or transmit disease. Benefits: They act as decomposers in nature.
