Mold Mite
Scientific Name: Tyrophagus putrescentiae
Order & Family: Order Sarcoptiformes, Family Acaridae
Size: 0.3 - 0.5 mm in length (extremely tiny, appearing as moving white dust)

Natural Habitat
Found in environments with high humidity and moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and damp storage areas, as well as on damp organic materials or stored food.
Diet & Feeding
Primarily feeds on mold, fungi, and fermented materials; they also consume high-protein and fatty stored foods like grains, cheese, and dried meats.
Behavior Patterns
They reproduce rapidly in humid conditions and often appear in large numbers, giving surfaces a 'dusty' appearance. They do not bite humans or animals but move constantly in search of fungal growth.
Risks & Benefits
They do not transmit disease or bite, but their presence can ruin stored food. In large numbers, they may cause skin irritation (grocer's itch) or respiratory allergies in sensitive individuals. They indicate a humidity or mold problem that needs addressing.
