Clothing moth
Scientific Name: Tineola bisselliella
Order & Family: Lepidoptera, Tineidae
Size: Larvae up to 13 mm (0.5 inches), adults 6-8 mm (0.2-0.3 inches) wingspan.

Natural Habitat
Indoors, especially in dark, undisturbed areas where animal fibers are stored (closets, attics, storage chests).
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural animal fibers like wool, silk, fur, feathers, felt, and leather. They do not feed on synthetic fibers or clean cotton. Adults do not feed.
Behavior Patterns
Adult moths are weak flyers and prefer to crawl or hop. They are attracted to dark areas. The damage is caused by the larvae, which spin silken tunnels or patches as they feed. They avoid light and typically stay hidden. The lifecycle can take from 2 months to several years depending on conditions.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Significant pest of textiles, causing damage to clothing, carpets, upholstery, and stored animal products. Can lead to costly destruction of valuable items. Benefits: None significant to humans; in natural environments, they contribute to decomposition of animal remains, but are primarily known as household pests.
