Natural Habitat
Damp, dark, and cool areas with high humidity, such as basements, attics, bathrooms, and kitchens.
Diet & Feeding
Starchy substances and items containing polysaccharides including book bindings, wallpaper paste, paper, carpet, clothing, and dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal and move with a characteristic fish-like swimming motion. They undergo ametabolous metamorphosis (no major larval stage) and can live for several years.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or transmit disease; however, they are considered pests due to their potential to damage household items like books, photos, and textiles. In ecosystems, they act as decomposers.
