Size: 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm (barely visible to the naked eye, appearing as a tiny moving speck)

Natural Habitat

Nests of birds or rodents; they often enter homes through cracks, vents, or windows when their hosts leave the nest.

Diet & Feeding

Hematophagous (blood feeders); they primarily feed on the blood of birds or rodents but will bite humans if their host is unavailable.

Behavior Patterns

They are most active at night. They can move quickly for their size and are known to infest bedding or furniture near bird nests or rodent activity. They cannot complete their life cycle on human blood alone.

Risks & Benefits

They cause intense itching, skin irritation, and dermatitis in humans. While annoying, they are not known to transmit diseases to humans. Benefit: None to humans; they are strictly parasitic pests.
