Natural Habitat

Indoors, especially in dark, undisturbed areas where natural fibers are stored, such as closets, attics, dresser drawers, and under furniture. They prefer humid conditions but can tolerate dry environments.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on natural fibers such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, and sometimes synthetic blends if mixed with natural fibers. They are also known to eat lint, dust, and debris containing these materials.

Behavior Patterns

Case-bearing larvae carry around a silk case covered with debris (like sand, silk, or other small particles) as they feed and grow. This case provides protection and camouflage. Adults are typically short-lived and may not feed.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Considered a significant household pest due to their destructive feeding on textiles, clothing, carpets, and upholstered furniture made of natural animal fibers. They can cause considerable damage to valuable items. Benefits: None in a household setting.
