Size: 1st through 3rd instar nymphs range from 1/4 to 1/2 inch (6–12 mm).

Natural Habitat

Found on various plants, particularly the invasive Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima), but also frequently seen on garden furniture and vehicles.

Diet & Feeding

Planthopper that feeds on plant sap from over 70 species of trees and vines, including grapes, hops, stone fruits, and hardwoods.

Behavior Patterns

Nymphs are very active jumpers; they hatch in spring and pass through four stages, the first three being black with white spots before turning red in the final stage.

Risks & Benefits

Major invasive pest that causes significant agricultural and ecological damage. They excrete sticky honeydew that promotes mold growth. It is highly recommended to kill these on sight in North America.
