Natural Habitat

Found in wooded areas, tall grass, and brush. They can also be found in animal nests and burrows.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate hematophages; they feed exclusively on the blood of mammals, birds, and sometimes reptiles and amphibians.

Behavior Patterns

Many species exhibit a behavior called "questing," where they climb to the tips of grass or leaves and wait for a passing host to latch onto. They have a multi-stage life cycle (egg, larva, nymph, adult) that requires a blood meal at each stage.

Risks & Benefits

Major vectors for several serious diseases, such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis. They are considered pests with no significant ecosystem benefits to humans.
