Dust Mite
Scientific Name: Dermatophagoides spp.
Order & Family: Acariformes, Pyroglyphidae
Size: 0.2 - 0.3 mm (microscopic)

Natural Habitat
Human dwellings, especially beds, carpets, upholstered furniture, and clothing. They thrive in warm, humid environments.
Diet & Feeding
Dead skin cells (dander) shed by humans and animals, as well as other organic debris.
Behavior Patterns
Dust mites are microscopic arachnids that feed on organic detritus. They do not bite, sting, or burrow into skin. They are largely sedentary and reproduce rapidly under favorable conditions (high humidity, moderate temperature, ample food source).
Risks & Benefits
Potential risks: Their fecal matter and decaying body parts are common allergens, triggering asthma, eczema, and allergic rhinitis in sensitive individuals. Potential benefits: They play a role in breaking down organic matter in indoor environments, although this benefit is largely outweighed by their allergenic properties in human habitats.
