Springtail

Scientific Name: Collembola

Order & Family: Order: Collembola

Size: Typically 1-2 mm long

Springtail

Natural Habitat

Found in damp, humid areas. Indoors, they are common in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and around potted plants where they are attracted to moisture and mold in grout, sinks, or soil.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on mold, mildew, fungi, and decaying organic matter.

Behavior Patterns

Springtails are known for their ability to 'jump' or 'spring' using a tail-like appendage called a furcula when disturbed. They are attracted to light and moisture and often appear in large numbers, especially when there is a moisture issue.

Risks & Benefits

Springtails are considered nuisance pests but are harmless to humans, pets, and property. They do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases. Their presence in large numbers indoors is a strong indicator of excess moisture or a water leak that is encouraging mold growth.
