Springtails
Scientific Name: Collembola (various species)
Order & Family: Order Collembola
Size: Typically 0.2 to 6 mm, but most common species are less than 3 mm.

Natural Habitat
Damp environments rich in organic matter, such as soil, leaf litter, decaying wood, compost, and occasionally in bathrooms or kitchens where moisture is present.
Diet & Feeding
Primarily detritivores, feeding on decaying organic matter, fungi, algae, bacteria, and sometimes plant roots.
Behavior Patterns
Springtails are known for their jumping ability, facilitated by a furcula (a forked appendage) under their abdomen. They are generally harmless to humans and are active decomposers in their ecosystems. They often aggregate in moist areas and can appear in large numbers, especially after rainfall or in overly damp indoor conditions.
Risks & Benefits
No known risks to humans (do not bite or carry diseases). They are beneficial decomposers, contributing to nutrient cycling and soil health. Can sometimes be a nuisance if found in large numbers indoors, indicating a moisture problem.
