Antlion larva (Doodlebug)
Scientific Name: Myrmeleontidae (larvae)
Order & Family: Neuroptera, Myrmeleontidae
Size: Larvae typically 2-15 mm (0.08-0.6 inches) in length.

Natural Habitat
Dry, sandy areas, often under overhangs or in loose soil where they can construct their pitfall traps. Can also be found in protected indoor locations like sheds or under houses.
Diet & Feeding
Predatory. The larvae construct conical pits in the sand and lie in wait at the bottom. When small insects, such as ants, fall into the pit, the antlion larva grabs them with its large, sickle-shaped jaws and injects digestive enzymes.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are known for their unique pit-building behavior to trap prey. They are mostly sessile once a pit is constructed, waiting patiently for prey. Adults are winged and nocturnal, resembling damselflies.
Risks & Benefits
No risks to humans; antlion larvae do not bite or sting people. They are beneficial as natural pest control, particularly helping to reduce ant populations. They pose no threat to structures or plants.
