Springtail

Natural Habitat

Damp, moist environments rich in organic matter. Found in leaf litter, soil, decaying wood, potted plants, floating on pool water, or in damp indoor areas like basements and bathrooms.

Diet & Feeding

Scavengers that feed on decaying organic matter, fungi, mold, algae, bacteria, and microscopic spores.

Behavior Patterns

Characterized by their 'furcula' (a tail-like appendage) which allows them to jump several inches into the air when disturbed, hence the name 'springtail'. They often gather in large numbers where moisture is persistent.

Risks & Benefits

They pose no direct risk to humans or pets (they do not bite or sting). They can be a nuisance in pools or homes but are generally beneficial to the environment as decomposers that help recycle organic matter in soil.
