Natural Habitat
Sandy soil, dust, or dirt in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
Diet & Feeding
Hematophagous (blood-feeding). The female embeds itself in the host's skin to feed on blood while producing eggs.
Behavior Patterns
Unlike most fleas, the female burrows into the skin of the host (usually the feet). She swells significantly as she produces hundreds of eggs, which are eventually released into the environment.
Risks & Benefits
Causes tungiasis, a painful skin infestation that can lead to secondary infections, gangrene, and physical impairment if left untreated. There are no known benefits to the ecosystem.
