Natural Habitat
Commonly found indoors worldwide in pantries, kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere stored dry goods are present. They can be found far from the original infestation source.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae have an exceptionally broad diet and feed on dry stored products like flour, bread, spices, cereals, pasta, pet food, and even non-food items like books, leather, and prescription drugs. Adults do not feed.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are active fliers and are attracted to light, which helps them disperse. Females lay eggs near a suitable food source. The larval stage ('grub') is responsible for feeding and damage. The complete life cycle from egg to adult can take two to seven months, depending on temperature.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: They are a significant pest that can infest and contaminate a wide variety of stored foods and organic materials. They do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases. Benefits: They have no benefits in a human environment; they are considered a pest.
