Angle Shades Moth

Natural Habitat

Widely distributed in gardens, woodlands, hedgerows, and other vegetated areas across Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. Often found near human habitation.

Diet & Feeding

Adult moths feed on nectar from various flowers. Larvae (caterpillars) are polyphagous, feeding on a wide range of plants including nettle, dock, bramble, various deciduous trees, and garden plants like lettuce, often causing some damage.

Behavior Patterns

The Angle Shades Moth is primarily nocturnal, although it can occasionally be seen flying during the day, especially when disturbed. Its distinctive wing shape and camouflage help it blend in with dead leaves, particularly when at rest. It is a migratory species and can be found in many areas. It often overwinters as a larva or pupa.

Risks & Benefits

Generally considered harmless to humans. While the caterpillars can graze on garden plants, they rarely cause significant damage to crops. As pollinators, adult moths contribute to the ecosystem. They also serve as a food source for birds and bats.
