Natural Habitat

Native to East Asia, but an invasive species in North America and Europe. Found in agricultural fields, orchards, forests, and commonly invades homes and structures in cooler months seeking shelter.

Diet & Feeding

Polyphagous, feeding on a wide range of host plants, including fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants. They feed by inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the plant tissue to extract juices.

Behavior Patterns

Known for emitting a foul-smelling odor when disturbed or crushed, which is a defense mechanism. They are attracted to lights and overwinter in protected areas, often congregating in large numbers inside homes or buildings.

Risks & Benefits

Primarily considered a pest due to extensive damage caused to agricultural crops, leading to significant economic losses for farmers. They are not known to bite humans or transmit diseases, but their presence in homes can be a nuisance, and their odor can be unpleasant if they are disturbed.
