Mold Mite
Scientific Name: Tyrophagus putrescentiae
Order & Family: Acari (order: Sarcoptiformes, suborder: Astigmata), Acaridae (family)
Size: 0.3 - 0.7 mm

Natural Habitat
Often found in damp, humid environments with high organic matter, frequently associated with food storage (grains, cheese, dried fruit), detritus, and moldy surfaces. They can also be found in homes, especially in areas with moisture issues.
Diet & Feeding
Primarily feeds on mold, fungi, dead organic matter, and sometimes on other small insects or their eggs. They are known to infest stored food products.
Behavior Patterns
Mold mites are very small and often go unnoticed until their populations are large. They thrive in high humidity (above 65%) and temperatures between 25-30°C. They reproduce rapidly under favorable conditions. They are known to infest food products and can cause damage through their feeding and contamination.
Risks & Benefits
Potential risks include causing allergic reactions (respiratory and dermal) in sensitive individuals due to their presence and fecal matter. They can contaminate and spoil stored food products, leading to economic losses. They are not known to bite humans or transmit diseases directly. There are no significant known benefits to humans or the ecosystem, as they are primarily considered a pest.
