Natural Habitat

Exclusively found on human hosts, primarily living in the seams of clothing and bedding of individuals with poor hygiene or in crowded conditions.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate hematophages; they feed exclusively on human blood several times a day.

Behavior Patterns

Unlike head lice, body lice live and lay eggs (nits) in clothing, only moving onto the skin to feed. They are spread through direct body contact or sharing infested clothing and bedding.

Risks & Benefits

Significant health risks; they can cause intense itching (pediculosis) and are vectors for serious diseases including bacterial typhus, trench fever, and epidemic relapsing fever.
