Natural Habitat
Primarily indoor environments where humans sleep, including mattresses, bed frames, furniture, and cracks in walls.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate hematophage; feeds exclusively on the blood of humans and occasionally other warm-blooded animals.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal insects that hide during the day and emerge at night to feed. They go through five nymphal stages, requiring a blood meal between each molt.
Risks & Benefits
Significant public health pests; they cause itchy bites and allergic reactions. While they are not known to transmit diseases, infestations cause intense psychological stress, sleeplessness, and can be very expensive to eradicate.
