Fungus Gnat
Scientific Name: Bradysia spp. (most common genus for indoor fungus gnats)
Order & Family: Diptera (Order), Sciaridae (Family)
Size: 2-8 mm (adults)

Natural Habitat
Damp, moist environments rich in decaying organic matter, especially common around houseplants, greenhouses, and compost piles.
Diet & Feeding
Adult fungus gnats feed on liquid, while larvae feed on fungi, decaying plant matter, and sometimes plant roots.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are weak fliers and often seen near the soil surface of potted plants or around windows. Larvae live in the top inch or two of soil. They have a relatively short life cycle (about 3-4 weeks from egg to adult).
Risks & Benefits
Potential risks: Larvae can damage plant roots, particularly seedlings and young plants, leading to wilting and poor growth. They are generally considered a nuisance pest in homes. Benefits: They can aid in the decomposition of organic matter in outdoor environments, but are mostly considered a pest indoors.
