Bird Mite (or Rodent Mite)
Scientific Name: Ornithonyssus spp. (e.g., Ornithonyssus sylviarum or Ornithonyssus bursa) or Liponyssoides sanguineus
Order & Family: Order: Mesostigmata; Family: Macronyssidae
Size: Very small, typically less than 1 mm (around 0.7mm to 1mm). They are barely visible to the naked eye.

Natural Habitat
Typically found in bird nests (pigeons, starlings, sparrows) or rodent burrows near human dwellings. They migrate into homes when their original hosts leave or die.
Diet & Feeding
Hematophagous (blood-feeding). They primarily feed on the blood of birds or rodents but will bite humans opportunistically when their primary host is absent.
Behavior Patterns
They are active parasites that crawl rapidly. They are often seen as tiny moving specks. After feeding on blood, their color changes from translucent/whitish to reddish-brown or dark red.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: They bite humans, causing intense itching, red welts, and skin irritation (dermatitis). While nuisance pests, they are not generally known to transmit diseases to humans, unlike ticks. They can infest bedding and furniture rapidly.
