Bird Mite
Scientific Name: Ornithonyssus sylviarum
Order & Family: Order Mesostigmata, Family Macronyssidae
Size: Hard to see with the naked eye; typically 0.5 to 1.0 mm (size of a period at the end of a sentence).

Natural Habitat
Found in bird nests (sparrows, starlings, pigeons) and can migrate into homes through vents, windows, or cracks when bird hosts leave the nest.
Diet & Feeding
Parasitic blood-feeders; they primarily feed on the blood of birds but will bite humans and pets if their natural host is unavailable.
Behavior Patterns
They are semi-permanent parasites that spend most of their life on host birds. When host birds fledge or die, the mites disperse in search of a new host, often creating infestations in nearby indoor structures.
Risks & Benefits
Risks include pinprick-like bites that cause intense itching, redness, and dermatitis in humans. They do not pose a significant disease risk to humans but can cause severe irritation; benefits are negligible as they are considered pests.
