Flat bug
Scientific Name: Aradidae
Order & Family: Hemiptera (order), Aradidae (family)
Size: 3-11 mm (0.12-0.43 inches)

Natural Habitat
Under loose bark of dead or decaying trees, in crevices, or on fungi; usually associated with woody habitats.
Diet & Feeding
Mycetophagous (fungus-feeding); they use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on fungal hyphae and spores within wood, particularly on fungi growing on dead trees.
Behavior Patterns
Cryptic coloration and flattened bodies help them blend in with tree bark, aiding in camouflage from predators. They are generally slow-moving. Often found congregating in groups under bark.
Risks & Benefits
Generally beneficial or neutral. They play a role in decomposition by feeding on fungi that break down wood, contributing to nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. They are not known to be pests of live trees, nor do they pose risks to humans.
