Natural Habitat

Found in areas of high humidity such as homes, warehouses, and libraries. They are common on old books, paper goods, wallpaper, and in stored food products like grains and cereals.

Diet & Feeding

Microscopic mold and fungi that grow on organic materials in damp conditions. They also consume the starch in book bindings, wallpaper paste, and starchy foods.

Behavior Patterns

Booklice are fast-moving insects that thrive in warm, moist environments. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult). Populations can build up rapidly under favorable conditions. They are often found in groups.

Risks & Benefits

They are considered nuisance pests. They do not bite humans or pets, nor do they spread disease or cause structural damage. However, large infestations can contaminate stored food products. Their presence is often an indicator of a moisture or mold problem.
