Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding

Piercing-sucking mouthparts used to feed on plant sap, particularly from kudzu and soybean plants.

Behavior Patterns

They are known for their aggregation behavior, especially when looking for overwintering sites. They emit a pungent odor when disturbed or crushed and undergo incomplete metamorphosis.

Risks & Benefits

They are considered a major agricultural pest for soybean crops; however, they provide a benefit by suppressing the growth of invasive kudzu vines. To humans, they can cause skin irritation or staining, and are a nuisance when they enter homes in large numbers.
