Size: Approximately 0.5 mm to 1 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Primarily found in bird nests, but can migrate into human dwellings when host birds leave the nest.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate blood-feeders, primarily preying on domestic and wild birds; will bite humans if a bird host is unavailable.
Behavior Patterns
They are highly active, reproduce rapidly, and are most often noticed in homes during the late spring and early summer when birds fledge.
Risks & Benefits
Can cause intensely itchy bites and skin irritation (dermatitis) in humans; they do not live or reproduce on humans and do not transmit diseases to them stored in the house.
