Natural Habitat
Damp, dark places such as bathrooms, kitchens, basements, attics, and storage areas. They prefer areas with high humidity.
Diet & Feeding
Starch-rich items including books, paper, glue, sugar, hair, dandruff, and sometimes synthetic fibers like rayon. They can also feed on dead insects and their own shed exoskeletons.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal and reclusive, silverfish are fast-moving and typically hide during the day. They have a distinctive 'fish-like' wiggling movement when they run. They can live for several years and reproduce slowly.
Risks & Benefits
Potential risks include damage to household items such as books, wallpaper, clothing, and stored foods due to their feeding habits. They are not known to transmit diseases or bite humans. There are no significant known benefits to humans or the ecosystem in an indoor setting.
