Scientific Name: Dermanyssus gallinae (most common, but other genera exist)

Order & Family: Mesostigmata, Dermanyssidae

Size: 0.75-1.0 mm (unfed). Can swell to 4-5 mm when engorged with blood.

Natural Habitat

Nests, perches, and bedding of birds (especially poultry and wild birds). Can briefly infest homes if hosts are nearby.

Diet & Feeding

Blood of birds. They are nocturnal feeders, usually feeding at night and hiding during the day.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal blood feeders, rapidly reproduce, and can survive for weeks or months off a host. They will seek new hosts if the primary host is removed or dies.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risks to humans: Can cause irritating bites if they infest homes, leading to dermatitis, itching, and discomfort. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans. Risks to birds: Can cause anemia, decreased egg production, skin irritation, and stress in poultry and pet birds. Benefits: Generally no direct benefits to humans or the ecosystem, primarily considered pests.
