Brown Marmorated Stink Bug

Natural Habitat

Originally from East Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan), it has become an invasive species in North America and Europe. It can be found in agricultural fields, orchards, gardens, and homes, especially as it seeks shelter for overwintering.

Diet & Feeding

Polyphagous, feeding on a wide variety of plants, including fruits (apples, peaches, berries), vegetables (corn, tomatoes, peppers, beans), and ornamental trees and shrubs.

Behavior Patterns

They are known for their distinctive shield-like shape and their ability to emit a foul-smelling odor when disturbed, which is a defense mechanism. They overwinter as adults, often seeking shelter inside homes and other structures in large numbers. They are strong fliers and can travel considerable distances.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Major agricultural pest, causing significant damage to crops by feeding on fruits and vegetables, leading to economic losses. They are also considered a nuisance pest when they invade homes in large numbers. Benefits: No significant benefits are known in regions where they are an invasive species; in their native range, they are part of the natural ecosystem.
