Ground Beetle

Natural Habitat

Widely diverse, typically found under stones, leaf litter, logs, in soil, and sometimes in gardens or agricultural fields. Many species prefer moist environments.

Diet & Feeding

Primarily predatory, feeding on a wide variety of small invertebrates such as caterpillars, slugs, snails, aphids, and other insect larvae. Some species are omnivorous, consuming seeds and plant material.

Behavior Patterns

Mostly nocturnal, hunting for prey at night. They are fast runners and, if disturbed, often play dead or attempt to escape quickly. Many species overwinter as adults, burrowing into the soil or under debris.

Risks & Benefits

Generally beneficial insects as they are significant predators of agricultural pests, including slugs and caterpillars. They pose no direct risks to humans; some larger species may emit a foul-smelling liquid as a defense mechanism when threatened, but this is harmless.
