Subterranean Termite (Swarmers)

Natural Habitat

Found in soil or moist wood; swarmers emerge from colonies often located beneath or within human structures.

Diet & Feeding

Cellulose-based materials, primarily wood, paper, and cardboard.

Behavior Patterns

Swarmers (alates) emerge in large numbers during the spring to mate and establish new colonies. They are often found near light sources and shed their wings shortly after emerging.

Risks & Benefits

High risk of significant structural damage to homes and buildings. Do not bite humans but are a major economic pest. Benefit the ecosystem naturally by decomposing dead wood and aerating soil.
