Size: Typically 12–19 mm (0.5–0.75 inches) in length, not including their long antennae and three tail-like appendages (cerci).

Natural Habitat

Found in dark, damp, and high-humidity areas within human dwellings, such as basements, attics, kitchens, and bathrooms. They often hide in cracks, behind wallpaper, in cupboards, and among books.

Diet & Feeding

They feed on carbohydrates, particularly starches and sugars. Their diet includes paper, glue in bookbindings, wallpaper paste, photos, clothing (cotton, linen, silk), and dry foods like flour and cereals.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and fast-moving, with a distinctive fish-like wiggling motion. They are wingless insects that molt throughout their entire lifespan. They prefer to stay hidden and will dart for cover when exposed to light.

Risks & Benefits

Silverfish are considered household pests. They do not bite or transmit diseases to humans. The primary risk is damage to property, including books, photographs, wallpaper, and clothing. They can also contaminate stored food items. They offer no benefits in a household environment.
