Scientific Name: Myrmeleontidae (larva)

Order & Family: Neuroptera, Myrmeleontidae

Size: 3-15 mm (larva)

Antlion larva (or 'doodlebug')

Natural Habitat

Sandy or dusty areas, often under overhangs or at the base of trees, where they can build their pitfall traps. Can also be found indoors in neglected dusty corners.

Diet & Feeding

Mainly ants and other small insects that fall into their pitfall traps. They are predators.

Behavior Patterns

Antlion larvae are known for constructing conical pitfall traps in sand or loose soil. They bury themselves at the bottom of the pit, with only their large jaws exposed, waiting for prey to fall in. If prey attempts to escape, the antlion will flick sand to cause it to tumble back down. Once caught, they inject venom and digestive enzymes into their prey.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans; they can bite if handled but it's not painful or medically significant. They are beneficial as natural pest control, especially in consuming ants.
