Carpet Beetle Larva

Natural Habitat

Indoors, especially in areas with natural fibers like wool, silk, fur, feathers, and dried animal products. They can be found in carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, clothing, pet beds, and sometimes in food pantries.

Diet & Feeding

Keratin-based materials (animal fibers, pet hair, human hair, feathers, dried skin/insects, wool, silk) and occasionally dried food products.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae are most active in dark, undisturbed areas. They are known to crawl slowly and can cause damage to fabrics by eating irregular holes. Adults are often found near windows as they are attracted to light, or outdoors feeding on pollen.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include damage to textiles, clothing, and stored goods. They are considered household pests. They do not bite or sting but can sometimes cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals due to their bristly hairs. No significant benefits in a household setting, but some species are used in museums to clean skeletons.
