Flour Mite or Grain Mite

Scientific Name: Acarus siro

Order & Family: Order: Sarcoptiformes, Family: Acaridae

Size: 0.33mm to 0.66mm (microscopic to barely visible to the naked eye)

Flour Mite or Grain Mite

Natural Habitat

Grain storage facilities, pantries, and food products such as flour, cereal, dried fruit, yeast, powdered milk, and cheese.

Diet & Feeding

They feed on stored grains, flour, fungal spores (mold), and various dry food products. They thrive in humid environments.

Behavior Patterns

These mites reproduce rapidly in warm, humid conditions. When populations explode, they can create a 'dusty' film on food surfaces that appears to be moving. They are often detected by a sweet, minty odor when crushed.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: They are a major pantry pest that contaminates food, making it unpalatable and often causing allergic reactions ('baker's itch') in humans. They can also transfer mold spores to food. Benefits: None in a domestic setting; they are primary decomposers in nature.
