Alate Termite (Swarming Termite)

Scientific Name: Rhinotermitidae (e.g., Reticulitermes, Coptotermes) or Kalotermitidae (e.g., Cryptotermes)

Order & Family: Blattodea, Infraorder Isoptera (Termites); Family: Rhinotermitidae (Subterranean Termites) or Kalotermitidae (Drywood Termites)

Size: Typically 6 to 12 mm (0.24 to 0.47 inches) including wings.

Alate Termite (Swarming Termite)

Natural Habitat

Subterranean termites prefer moist soil and wood in contact with the ground. Drywood termites live within wooden structures, not requiring contact with soil moisture. Alates are seen swarming from nests to establish new colonies.

Diet & Feeding

Cellulose-based materials such as wood, paper, fabric, and other plant-based materials.

Behavior Patterns

Alates are the reproductive caste of termites. They are winged and emerge from mature colonies to swarm, typically during warm, humid conditions. After swarming, they shed their wings, find a mate, and attempt to establish a new colony. They are attracted to light.

Risks & Benefits

Termites are significant pests, causing extensive damage to wooden structures, homes, and furniture, leading to costly repairs. They are beneficial in ecosystems as decomposers of dead wood and organic matter, recycling nutrients back into the soil.
