Springtail

Natural Habitat

Found in damp or moist environments, such as leaf litter, soil, under logs, and in compost. Indoors, they are common in basements, bathrooms, crawl spaces, and around potted plants where moisture is present.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on fungi, mold, mildew, algae, and decaying organic matter.

Behavior Patterns

Gets its name from a spring-like appendage (furcula) under its abdomen that it uses to jump when disturbed. They are attracted to moisture and are often found in large numbers. They do not fly.

Risks & Benefits

Springtails are considered nuisance pests but are harmless to humans, pets, and building structures. They do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases. Their presence indoors usually indicates a moisture problem. Outdoors, they are beneficial decomposers that contribute to nutrient cycling in soil.
