Natural Habitat
Typically found in bird nests, poultry houses, and occasionally inside homes when birds nest on the structure.
Diet & Feeding
Blood of avian hosts (birds); they may bite humans if their bird host leaves the nest, but they cannot survive on human blood.
Behavior Patterns
They are highly mobile, active during the night, and reproduce rapidly near host nesting sites. They follow carbon dioxide and heat to find hosts.
Risks & Benefits
Risks include itchy skin irritation and dermatitis in humans. They do not transmit diseases to humans but are significant pests to poultry and wild birds.
