Boxelder Bug nymph
Scientific Name: Boisea trivittata
Order & Family: Hemiptera / Rhopalidae
Size: Nymphs range from 1/16 to 1/2 inch; adults are approximately 1/2 inch in length.

Natural Habitat
Typically found on or near boxelder, maple, and ash trees. They often move to the sunny sides of buildings, rocks, and wood mulch during the day to stay warm.
Diet & Feeding
Mostly herbivorous, feeding on the juices of seeds, leaves, and flowers of the host tree (primarily boxelder).
Behavior Patterns
Nymphs are bright red and lack fully developed wings. They are known for congregating in large numbers. During autumn, they seek out cracks and crevices in houses to overwinter.
Risks & Benefits
They are considered a nuisance pest rather than a threat. They do not bite or sting and do not cause significant damage to most ornamental trees, though they may leave small reddish stains on surfaces if crushed.
