Lawn Prawn (Terrestrial Amphipod)

Natural Habitat

Damp leaf litter, mulch, and moist garden soil; often seen on pavement after heavy rain or flooding.

Diet & Feeding

Scavengers that feed on decaying organic matter, leaf litter, and detritus.

Behavior Patterns

They are moisture-dependent and relatively dormant during the day. When their habitat becomes too wet (flooding) or too dry, they emerge and often die on dry surfaces like concrete, where they turn a reddish-pink or pale color.

Risks & Benefits

They are harmless to humans, pets, and structures. They benefit the ecosystem by breaking down organic matter and recycling nutrients into the soil.
